I know this may seem like a weird question, but I never knew what I was eating.  I never read the ingredients of my foods or drinks.  Do you read the ingredients?  It is scary when I think that I would eat whatever as long as it tasted good.

Books

When I realized I should really be reading the ingredients of my foods, I realized I didn’t know what the ingredients meant.  I didn’t know if it was a healthy ingredient or an unhealthy ingredient.  To help me learn more about ingredients, I bought a book called Dictionary of Food Ingredients by Robert S. Igoe and Y.H. Hui.  This book literally gives you the definition of the ingredient.  It wasn’t as helpful as I was hoping for, but it’s a great start.  I also bought the book, The Body Book by Cameron Diaz.   I love this book.  I would highly recommend it to all of you.  It is written and explained in a way that I understand (Yay).  She talks about food, your body and fitness.

Reading The Ingredients

As I learned more about ingredients and started reading the ingredients on foods at the grocery store, I realized what I thought was healthy is not necessarily healthy.  Here are a couple pictures I took of some foods I ate when I first began trying to eat healthy.

BrowniesGranola

I’m not trying to pick on Fiber One.  I realized that it was two Fiber One products when I sat down to write this blog.  The Fiber One Brownies are made of wheat flour not whole wheat.  I try to only eat whole grains now.  It also contains sugar (2nd ingredient so likely high quantity).  The Fiber One Chocolate Chip granola bar also contains added sugar.  This is the case with many granola bars so watch for this.  When trying to eat healthy and lose weight, avoiding added sugars will help.  These were just two examples I wanted to share with you.

Your Turn

Start reading the ingredients on the food you buy.  Leave a comment on this blog post telling me something you learned from reading the ingredients on the foods you eat.
